If you aren’t familiar with the title, Phantasy Star Online 2 is a free-to-play online action roleplay game in the Phantasy Star series, developed and published by Sega. The game was launched as a continuation of the Phantasy Star Online and Phantasy Star Universe. While Phantasy Star Online 2 features some gameplay elements and visuals familiar to fans of the previous Phantasy Star games, it also introduces a few unique twists!

As SEGA’s latest entry into the MMORPG world, the game has been generating a lot of buzz on social media. Check out this list of the Top 10 PSO2 Reddit Posts (found at r/PSO2) from 2021.

  1. Character-Creation meme

What better way to start a list than with a meme? In response to the Phantasy Star Online 2: New Gensesisxi’s decision to remove the need to choose between binary genders for its character-creation screen, Reddit user u/Duymon created this hilarious meme video in which they decided to identify as a hover tank! I think this tank looks pretty cool, personally!

2. PSO2 Server meme

Reddit user u/sugusugux poked some fun at the SEGA servers with this funny meme. We’ve all had those moments where server issues can pull you right out of a fun gaming session.

Even though New Genesis players have had some rough experiences with delayed hits and lag, users seem to agree that the server status as a whole is much better than it had been for the original Phantasy Star Online 2 release. Great job on the improvement, SEGA!

3. Overpowered Boss meme

The classic pitfall of the MMORPG player is taking on an overpowered boss with your friends searching for some enticing loot. u/Mister21Savage shared this Dragon Ball Z meme to capture that exact scenario. Reddit users started to share their own stories of seeing veteran players taking on some of the game’s enemies and jumping in to aid them before they were ready themselves! Those high-level enemies can be unforgiving.

u/PillarBiter put it best, “One giant sword swing later and off he went to central city.”

4. Etoile Facetanking for the Team meme

Surviving a major enemy’s DPS check might be a simple task for the party tanks, but that isn’t always the case for everyone else! Players who are used to playing tanky classes like Etoile might find the situation in u/cucoo5’s hilarious meme a little too familiar.

Luckily, the stakes for failing the DPS checks in PSO2 aren’t quite as high as they are in some similar MMORPGs, such as Final Fantasy XIV - which could not only end the fight but would also set back the whole party’s progress. In PS02, Etoile can still save the day!  As u/NylonFox puts it, “Someone has to rez everyone.”

5.  Peak CAST meme

In Phantasy Star Online 2, CASTs are one of the four races available for player creation. Reddit user u/Hanaxar took roleplaying their character to new heights by using the Sega Saturn Mask accessory to make themselves look like a toaster serving up some bread!

6. Knee Socks meme

I wouldn’t blame you if you had to do a double-take while scrolling past this hilarious image! User u/arcx500 captured a picture of a Rappy, one of the Phantasy Star Online universe’s most popular creatures, seemingly enjoying a player character’s knee socks a little too much!

As u/squiggit mentions, this might not be an unfair reaction given how ludicrously expensive socks have become in the game.

7. A cool screenshot of a ghoulish player character!

In an homage to flamboyant skeleton character Papyrus from Undertale, Reddit user u/Papapikapika decided to give his player character this fantastic look. They captured the spirit of the original character perfectly, right down to the oversized boots. Maybe they will run into a PSO2 Sans some time. Now that would be a great screenshot!

8. A little bit of Phasion with this cool character Matoi cosplay!

Matoi is one of the most popular characters in Phantasy Star Online 2. She is a previous member of the Council of Six as the second Klariskrays, one of the Trio of Heroes. This great screenshot from Reddit user u/GuardianofWhite has recreated her look perfectly, prompting some speculation on whether or not us players will get a chance to learn what happened to the original Phantasy Star Online 2 cast in New Genesis.

9. An Issue with Mesetta Bots.

Unfortunately, PSO2 has faced a community issue similar to many other MMORPG games before, like World of WarCraft and Runescape. A section of the player base has been annoyed by the growing presence of currency-selling bots, which often takes over public chat areas with their spam messages. At least Reddit user u/GiantDookie69 was able to laugh at the issue by sharing this meme.

10. Doing Triggers Without the Story Meme

Closing out our list, u/metalhev has shared a great meme capturing the feeling many newcomers can have when first entering the classic JRPG, and Phantasy Star Online 2 is no exception! Sometimes it can be hard to piece together the story elements of the game presented in the cutscenes when you can constantly run around taking part in epic battles instead! At least players don’t have to find quest tablets to watch these cutscenes anymore.

That’s all for now, but we can’t wait to see what the PSO2 community comes up with next!
